ECOHULLCLEAN system – Biofouling management with reclaim and filtration capabilities

Revolutionizing Underwater Hull Cleaning with ECOHULLCLEAN

In maritime operations, the need for sustainable and efficient solutions has never been greater. Diving Status, in collaboration with the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR), embarked on a groundbreaking project to address the challenges of underwater hull cleaning. This case study explores the development and implementation of ECOHULLCLEAN, an integrated system designed to revolutionize underwater hull cleaning while prioritizing environmental sustainability.

Project Overview

From 2019 to 2023, ECOHULLCLEAN aimed to transform the traditional approach to underwater hull cleaning by introducing an innovative system capable of capturing, separating, and managing bio fouling removed during the cleaning process. With a focus on the Saronikos Gulf, a hotspot for alien species in the Greek Seas, the project sought to mitigate the environmental impact of hull cleaning activities while enhancing vessel performance and longevity.

Challenges

Traditional hull cleaning methods often result in the discharge of bio fouling and invasive species back into the marine environment, posing significant ecological risks. Additionally, the management of bio-waste generated during the cleaning process presents logistical and environmental challenges. Addressing these issues required a comprehensive and technologically advanced solution.

The ECOHULLCLEAN Solution

ECOHULLCLEAN integrates cutting-edge technology and innovative design to address the challenges of underwater hull cleaning. The system includes a Reclaim System with exceptional mass pumping capabilities, capable of bringing all cleaning byproducts to the surface efficiently. An Automatic Self-Cleaning Backwashing Filter, utilizing SCREEN-STRAINER technology, ensures continuous operation while effectively removing contaminants from discharged water. Partnering with ERMA FIRST, the filtration system returns purified water to the sea, meeting stringent environmental standards.

Implementation

Throughout the development and testing phases, Diving Status and HCMR collaborated closely to refine and optimize ECOHULLCLEAN. Field testing in the Saronikos Gulf provided valuable insights into the system’s performance and environmental impact. By leveraging the expertise of both organizations and conducting rigorous testing, ECOHULLCLEAN reached a level of maturity ready for commercial release.

Results

The implementation of ECOHULLCLEAN from 2019 to 2023 marks a significant milestone in the maritime industry’s journey towards sustainability and efficiency. The system’s ability to capture and separate bio fouling, while returning purified water to the sea, demonstrates its potential to revolutionize underwater hull cleaning practices worldwide. Furthermore, ECOHULLCLEAN sets a new standard for environmental stewardship in the shipping and oil & gas industries, paving the way for a more sustainable future.

With ECOHULLCLEAN, Diving Status and HCMR have exemplified the power of collaboration and innovation in addressing complex environmental challenges. By harnessing technology and expertise, the project has produced a transformative solution that not only improves operational efficiency but also safeguards marine ecosystems. As the maritime industry continues to evolve, ECOHULLCLEAN stands as a beacon of sustainability, guiding the way towards a cleaner and more responsible future.
